Can
Corruption be erased or reduced drastically ??
Respected
Jury and esteemed thought leaders ! What is corruption – Any act which makes
one morally depraved. Deviations from the purist ideals , systemic degradation.
Something like when the fence meant to protect the crop starts eating it.
What makes
corruption the most discussed phenomena- Because its like a termite eating up
all our age old values and making our egalitarian growth impossible.
Why corruption
flourished – Social values changed with advent of modern socio-economic methods
of civilization. We forgot or rather negated the feeling of “Trusteeship”
towards wealth. Isha Upanishad professed
“Ten tyakten bhunjitha” , enjoy with renunciation. During Chanakya era , the
highest social paradigm was “Idam rashtraay na mamah” , which means this
belongs to nation , not me.
But , we
knowingly kept these ideas progressively alienated over time and indulged
in “ To have more and more” and “Eat ,
drink and be merry”.
Gurucharan
Das in his book “ Difficulty of being good “ says that ancient Greeks had a
proactive method of counteracting social jealousies due to a personal hoarding
and growth. They used to send a person to programmed exile for 5-10 years.
Citing and accepting the reality that disproportionate belongings generate
jealousy in others and there must be some means to vent this jealousy. In India , people agreed upon two
renunciating stages of life called
“Vaanprastha” and “Sanyaas” . But we have washed it all. So , today we
have peaks of belongings , peaks of attachments and peaks of natural jealous
forces around to counter it. As a result we see so called great leaders ,
businessmen , advocates enjoying their jail terms.
Now question
come “How can we reduce or eliminate corruption” ?
Only mantra
“ Honesty “ – we need to create an Honest society and that would surely ensure
Corruption free society. This can be done by four pronged strategy:
1. Honesty Generation – We need to reach
out to the kids , the future of society. We need to train them young. We need
to reinstate to them that Honesty still remains to be the best policy. Prior to
the fact that our children start dreaming of becoming a doctor , engineer or
manager , we have to train them to be human. None of the govt schools teach
lessons on moral science. We need to sow the seeds of new world order morality
in our kids to see an emerging India or emerging planet.
2. Honesty Propagation – Enough have we talked on corruption. Now we have to
aim to make an Honest India , Talk in terms of honesty , let the scale of
character be honest and less honest. This will make a paradigm shift from
corruption to honesty.
3. Honesty modelling – We need to talk
more and more of honesty and ways to achieve it. Most of our minds are
engrossed with scams and its figures. We need to talk about honest leaders ,
how they work , how they perform and how they survive. Our kids , our society
and ourselves must not forget the honest deeds in the hurricane of corruption.
4. Anti Corruption measures- Unless
above steps are followed all anti corruption institutions would prove futile.
From hospitals to classrooms , from power centres of Delhi to panchayats , from
rockets to needles , where all can we put CBI , CID , CVC etc. But still , importance
of such institutions are un remarkable . What we need more is specific measures
for control and the trials to be within a time frame and punishments extreme.
We need to send a message across that Yes we are serious on issues of
corruption. So , empower and envision the anti-corruption bodies.
Finally I would like to reiterate that corruption can be reduced and even
eliminated. The process has to start from us today and at this moment. Our
values , our honesty are our possession and its growth and propagation are our
own responsibility. So , I believe together we can and together we will.
THANKS.
